Benefits
What happens when you quit?
Stopping smoking brings health benefits that begin almost straight away:
- After 20 minutes: Your pulse rate starts to return to normal.
- After 8 hours: Oxygen levels improve and carbon monoxide in your blood is reduced by half.
- After 48 hours: All carbon monoxide is cleared. Your lungs begin to clean themselves and your sense of taste and smell improves.
- After 72 hours: Your bronchial tubes relax, breathing becomes easier and energy starts to increase.
- After 2–12 weeks: Your circulation improves, making it easier for blood to reach your heart and muscles.
And that’s just the start; in the long-term, quitting reduces your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and lung conditions and helps you breathe easier, live longer and feel better.
