Fit for Work? Help with Sick Leave
When you are unwell, it can sometimes be appropriate to take a leave of absence from work, either for your own recovery, or for the benefit of your colleagues.
A doctor's note (fit-note, sick-note or Med3) can be provided when necessary, however your GP is unable to provide one until you have missed 7 calendar days of work. Statutory Sick Pay regulations state that an employer is required to accept self-certification from the employee to cover the first 7 days.
Some employers may insist on a Doctor's note for this period, and one can usually be provided on a private basis (for a small fee) in this situation, usually payable by your employer.
If your employer requires a 'self certificate', then more information, as well as a downloadable form can be obtained here.
Fit-notes can help with getting you back into work, by clarifying necessary adaptations / plans for phased return / altered hours etc, in order to make returning to work easier.
