The Common Ailments Scheme is a service available in the local area, which offers confidential, professional help and free-of-charge treatment for 27 common health conditions. This includes providing access to some over-the-counter medications and prescriptions, without needing to see your GP first.
This is a service available in your area, offering pharmacist consultations for 'Common Ailments'. Please see the following information to help understand if this service may be appropriate for you. The purpose of this scheme is to offer care to patients sooner than they might receive from their GP, and thereby free up GP time for more complex issues / reviews.
If you have one of the conditions listed below and wish to register for a consultation under the Common Ailment Scheme, then please inform your pharmacist on arrival.
It is best to phone ahead to make sure the pharmacist is able to see you.
Although an appointment is not always needed, please be aware a pharmacist may not be able to see you straight away. They may ask you to return within 48 hours or will signpost you to another pharmacy who will be able to help. It can help to phone ahead first.

- Indigestion
- In-growing toenails
- Intertrigo (rash in skin folds)
- Mouth ulcers
- Nappy rash

What to expect
- You will have a private consultation with the pharmacist in the pharmacy consultation room, this will usually take between 5 and 10 minutes.
- If your pharmacist feels you would benefit from seeing another healthcare professional, such as GP or optometrist, they will make this recommendation for you to contact the appropriate practice
